Cupping, Gua Sha & Moxa

Traditional Chinese Methods of Treatment: Gentle Techniques, Dramatic Results

To Westerners, Acupuncture is probably the most popular form of Traditional Chinese Medicine (TCM), but there are several other methods of treatment often used in combination to safely accelerate healing and enhance general wellbeing. These include Chinese Herbs, Cupping, Moxabustion or moxa (pronounced mocksah) and Gua Sha (Pronounced gwa shaw). The following are brief descriptions of these remedies. Dr. Vicki is highly skilled in performing all of these techniques. For more information on how they can help you, please contact her.

Experience the Soothing, Healing Power of Cupping

Cupping is a traditional Chinese healing technique generally performed to increase circulation in certain areas of the body and help relieve pain, as well as to pull toxins and heat from the body.  To do this, an alcohol swab is lighted by a match and is held briefly inside glass cups to slightly heat and expand the air. The cups are then placed on key parts of the body, creating soothing, mini vacuums that pull the skin and muscle tissue toward the jars. Patients usually feel a slightly tight sensation from the tugging of the vacuum, but the overall experience is extremely soothing and relaxing for the whole body and for specific muscle tissues treated.

The entire procedure lasts anywhere from 5 to 20 minutes. The treated areas temporarily turn slightly red, especially if the area treated is blocked energetically. The redness normally fades in a few days if not sooner. Cupping is often followed by another traditional Chinese technique called Gua Sha.

Release Toxins & Reduce Stress Naturally with Gua Sha

Cupping is often the perfect complement to the healing technique known as Gua Sha (Pronounced gwa shaw). Gua literally means to “scrape” or “rub”. Sha is defined as “reddish, elevated skin”. This invigorating technique involves lightly scraping the skin in key areas with Chinese ceramic spoons, pieces of smooth jade or stones, until the treated area turns red. Used for a wide array of health conditions, this deceptively simple technique stimulates the blood and muscle tissue, encouraging the bodily release of toxins and stress. Redness on the skin appears after treatment but naturally fades quickly.

Discover the Healing Magic of Moxabustion

Moxabustion or Moxa, is a common healing technique in Traditional Chinese Medicine (TCM) The treatment involves burning an herb, mugwort, at a close but safe distance from the skin, or directly on top of a needle, in order to warm key Acupuncture or energy points throughout the body. This creates a soothing, pleasant feeling of heat that warms the body’s meridians, opens energy channels, and regulates qi (energy) and blood flow.  It also expels cold and dampness from the body. Some of the conditions that Moxa successfully treats include asthma, diarrhea, rheumatic pain, abdominal pain, vomiting, several gynecological disorders and more.
