TCM Diagnostics: Gently, Accurate Health Exams without Probing or Prodding

Practitioners of Traditional Chinese Medicine (TCM) use five essential diagnostic techniques to evaluate your health and determine a proper course of treatment. All are non-invasive procedures, so they are ideal for men, women and children of all ages. They are typically performed during an office visit. Some can even be performed successfully during a Skype consultation. The five techniques are as follows:

Inspection focuses on examination of areas of the face, including subtle colors, lines, wrinkles, puffiness and dryness.  This also includes careful analysis of the tongue:  size, shape, tension, color and coating, the presence or absence of teeth marks around the edge, and the overall energy of the tongue.  Tongue diagnosis is one of the most important diagnostic techniques as this organ reveals the condition of organs and energy throughout the body.

Auscultation involves listening to the quality and sound of the voice, and for particular sounds throughout the body.

Olfaction focuses on observing the presence of body odor. Different scents refer to different organs. The scents reveal themselves, especially during an Acupuncture treatment when the person is the most relaxed. In order to tune in to her patients’ body scents, Dr. Vicki asks her patients to refrain from perfume or other scents on the day of treatment.

Inquiry involves a series of strategic questions posed by a trained practitioner. These questions focus on several key characteristics and symptoms, including health history, family history, present symptoms, physical pain, sleeping patterns, appetite and more.

Palpation includes abdominal diagnosis, where various points are pressed to reveal what is happening in the energy and organs.  It also includes feeling and listening to the pulses on the wrists, which relate to   the twelve meridians or energy lines of the body. The pulse is measured both at a superficial and deep level. It is examined for irregularities and imbalances in rhythm, strength and volume.
